Dear Parents,

This week we discovered what happens when you put things in water. Does it sink or float?  Will it stay together or fall apart?  Perhaps even change color.  We conducted experiments to see if we can support the new information that we learned, we built boats and even great big ships.  Amazing things took place in our classroom and we had a great deal of fun along the way.  Next week will be the final few days of our unit “What does water do?” We will take some time to think about different ways that water helps us.  We will also take a closer look at our Ocean.  I anticipate a great grand finale to this unit.

Also, we are in the middle of what teachers like to refer to as “March Madness”.  This is the time of year that students start to experience end of winter blues and the start of spring fever.  This is the time we are comfortable enough with each other to sometimes forget that we must be kind and respectful to one another. In an effort to encourage our class to be a bit more sensitive to each other I have introduced the concept of “Feather or Rock” words.  We go over a few scenarios working with different types of words that might be hard like a rock or soft like a feather.  For example, “Get up right now!”  This would be an example of using rock words.  They are rough and hard on our heart.  In contrast, “May I please pass by you?” is a more polite, soft as a feather approach to speaking to someone.  We have a class full of beautiful hearts, we simply need a bit more practice in protecting feelings sometimes.  I will also send home some resources that may be supportive in your daily efforts to reinforce these concepts with your child, as many of you have expressed interest in bridging the home/school behavioral connection as well.  As always, I thank you for your continued support and efforts to work together on this.

Just a few reminders:

  1. Please do not forget this weekend is our Springfest Celebration. If there are any last minute questions, please feel free to contact the office.
  2. Show and tell resumes on schedule with our final week of water related sharing. We’ve had some lovely presentations.
  3. This might be a good time to double check your child’s box and be sure that it is fully stocked with all the extra clothing needed “just in case”. Socks, undergarments, shirt and pants are the standards.

As always, have a fantastic weekend and we look forward to finishing up our lessons about the water.

All our best,

Ms. Jennifer and Ms. Francesca
